Photos: Gotye @ Showbox SoDo

International star Gotye performed on April 10th at Showbox SoDo. Gotye, whose real name is Wouter De Backer, was born in Belgium and grew up in Australia. He’s been recording since 2001, but it was last year’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” which threw him into a whole new level of recognition. That song hit number one all over the world. When photographer Amy Elyse heard Gotye was coming here, she jumped right on it. Thank you Amy for these handsome photos.

A wonderful friend of mine turned me on to The Lumineers – a band I had heard of but not yet seen – when she asked me if I wanted to join her for their Seattle show. I am on a mission to see shows and listen to music those close to me recommend, and I wanted to hang out with my friend and check the show out. It turns out I love this band. The show was joyous and warm, spiritually and physically (Neumos was packed and sweaty, very sweaty). Seattle, prepare yourself again to see The Lumineers at this year’s Capitol Hill Block Party on July 22nd.

Hotels celebrated the release of their EP, Cinemascope I, the first in a trilogy of music they’ve called Film Noir Pop, on April 27th at Columbia City Theater. Have I said lately how much I love this band? The show featured hypnotic sounds and guest vocalist Adra Boo of Fly Moon Royalty, plus the excellent musicianship of each band member.

Photos: Van Halen @ the Tacoma Dome

My favorite Van Halen song is most likely “Running with the Devil.” I took photos of the first three songs of Van Halen’s show on Saturday night at the Tacoma Dome and what did they play second? “Running with the Devil,” of course. So while I didn’t get to have my own little freak-out to that song when I got to my seat, I had the privilege of taking photos of this seminal band. I’m going to judge every person reading here – if you do not like at least one Van Halen song, you’re missing something. “Beautiful Girls,” “Unchained,” “Ain’t Talkin’ ’bout Love,” oh you know. A very fine moment during the show, next to the awesome drum and guitar solos, was David Lee Roth introducing “Ice Cream Man” by talking about his dog herding hobby. He likes dogs!
