Chvrches, the Scottish electronic band, played two shows at the Showbox SoDo last week. The group consists of Lauren Mayberry (lead vocals, additional synthesizers, and samplers), Iain Cook (synthesizers, guitar, bass, vocals), and Martin Doherty (synthesizers, samplers, vocals). Chvrches is touring in support of their debut album, The Bones Of What You Believe. The first single, “The Mother We Share” was featured in the opening video for the 2014 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony in Glasgow, Scotland.

In May the earnest and current band (I’m not going to call them retro, because they’re doing this now! for real!) Steel Panther were in Seattle to headline Showbox SoDo. They always make fans happy with their awesome glam outrageousness. For openers they brought Future Villains, a fellow Los Angeles band, with them. All photos by Dan Rogers:

Mark Lanegan

Mark Lanegan and his sexy voice” is how I posted really quick on Facebook to the world while catching Lanegan’s opening set for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds on July 2nd. With a voice on magnificent par with another of my favorite singers, Brit Richard Hawley, Lanegan sincerely charmed that hardened audience. Nick Cave fans are serious concert-goers. They would not, as the phrase goes, suffer any fool gladly. Lanegan – the opposite of anything foolish- is a vocalist of such sinuous evolution, who could shut up any uneasy audience.

If you don’t know Mark Lanegan as a solo artist, you would probably know his band, the Screaming Trees. A friend of mine boldly stated that Lanegan’s voice never got the recognition it deserved in the Screaming Trees. This is probably the case. On his own Lanegan can let that beauty pop out right damn in front. His set included songs from albums including I’ll Take Care of You and Blues Funeral plus his album of covers, Imitations. About that cover album. There’s a part of me that thinks about how great it would be if Lanegan’s voice covered any of my favorite songs. From Imitations, he selected “Mack the Knife” and a perfectly moody “You Only Live Twice.”

Lanegan also joined Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds for the Bad Seeds’ “The Weeping Song,” duetting with Cave in a moment of rare sublimity.

No Bells, Mark Lanegan’s latest album, is out now!
