Video: Sofie Royer‘s “Schweden Espresso”
Why You Want to Watch: Sofie Royer, an Austrian musician who is a classically trained viola and violin player, hits Vegas in this video. I love all her beautiful dresses and she just looks like she is having so much fun. The casinos were gracious to let her walk around on landmarks. Kudos to Ukrainian director Eugene Kotlyarenko, whose directing is magic.

Dinosaur Jr. brought tons of Marshall amps with them to totally rock the Neptune in Seattle. Look at those amps! Look at them! The grunge rock band, led by J Mascis, are now enjoying the weather in Australia for a string of dates. For the Seattle date, they were joined by some famous friends: Dave Matthews, Mudhoney’s Mark Arm and Pearl Jam’s Matt Cameron.

Cool Cover: Jeon Somi’s Game Plan
Artist: Jeon Somi
Album: Game Plan
Details: Game Plan is South Korean/Canadian singer Jeon Somi’s debut EP. The cover is all about hearts, and I think even her hair might be done in a heart shape. I am not sure. But I love the red, pink and playing card concept.

I had never heard of alternative folk music before I entered Neumos on Saturday, January 13th. However, when Odie Leigh and the Official Bard of Baldwin County graced the stage, I was pleasantly surprised. The sound was decidedly Americana, but with a new wave edge. Opener the Official Bard of Baldwin County spoke to queer representation and taboo topics, underscored by solo guitar riffs worthy of mainstream praise. Odie Leigh entered the stage with a small band comprised of an upright bass player, drummer and Leigh on guitar. Eventually she played a few songs solo, reminiscing on the time when she only ever played solo. Her song “Take Back” is still stuck in my head. It’s a catchy tune reminding me that sometimes, I should put myself first. A valuable message to take into the new year.

Cool Cover: Dream Drop’s Acne Superstar
Artist: Dream Drop
Album: Acne Superstar
Details: Swedish band Dream Drop opted for what could be a Valentine Day’s themed cover. Big red hearts matched by big red eyes and a blue-tinged black fringe on the heads of red-lipped dolls. Very pretty. The vinyl of the album is red and black too!
