Välkommen till Seattle, Robyn. On Sunday the Swedish artist Robyn had a very busy day with an appearance at Easy Street Records and a full live show at Neumos. Photographer/writer Suzi Pratt and I checked out the evening show, while photographer Simon Krane caught Robyn’s set at Easy Street. My favorite moment of the show was probably the awesome version of “We Dance to the Beat,” where she was bathed in lights that made her look neon.

Show Review & Photos: Natalia Kills @ Neumos

I knew Natalia Kills was going to put on a stunning show, but boy did she manage to far surpass my high expectations. She’s an artist you need to get to know right now. On Sunday evening she opened for Robyn at Neumos and though her set was way too brief, it was exciting for every moment. Natalia Kills knows that it’s smart to leave an audience wanting more, and she sure left me wanting to see a bigger set very soon. Key tracks of hers are “Mirrors,” “Love is a Suicide,” “Zombie” and “Wonderland”. Each one is subversive and saucy. And I need to add I loved these songs before I knew a thing of what she looks like or what her live shows would be like – the live show and her appearance are extravagant bonuses. Das Racist were here on a Friday evening for their second date with Seattle. The band played the Comet last month, and for November they played to an all-ages audience at Chop Suey. I find this band to be unique, cerebral and entertaining. The atmosphere at Chop Suey was a bit chaotic at times (audience members onstage and offstage were excited, that’s cool), but I am definitely looking forward to catching them again.

Photos & Show Review: Built to Spill @ Showbox at the Market

Indie guitar heroes Built to Spill are epic live, and seeing them let loose in a venue as small and intimate as the Showbox was something special. This was the first night of a two-night stand and Doug Martsch and Co. were on their game from the start.

The crowd steadily filtered in as the first opener, Cober took the stage. Cober is a one woman band, very unique in delivery. She gets up on stage with a double neck guitar, one 12-string and one 6-string, and runs loops in the background as her vocals straddle the line between pleasure and sorrow. The music is decidedly low key. An odd choice to open up for Built to Spill, but talented nonetheless.

Second opener, Le Fleur, was most likely on the bill because they are from Built to Spill’s home base of Boise. Built to Spill likes to support their local music scene but Le Fleur left much to be desired. The five piece has promise but on this night their live performance fell flat for me. The lead vocals are powerful with bassist Ivy and keyboardist Zach sharing duties but their music isn’t anything I haven’t heard before. A little tighter live performance and more diversity in their songs would go a long way.

Built to Spill

Built to Spill took to the stage 15 to 20 minutes before their set was scheduled to start and as I mentioned above their set was epic. Martsch thanked the audience after nearly every song but didn’t interact much more than that. They employed very little use of the lighting system with just simple lights shining down. They let the music speak for itself. Martsch’s guitar work cried out and brought the Showbox to life.

The audience was diverse. Someone, somewhere puffed a joint and the guy next to me sounded like a whooping crane when he cheered. They ran through all the Built to Spill favorites with almost every song turning into a sing-along. The crowd let out a collective cheer when they launched into the intro to “Car”. Other favorites included “Distopian Dream Girl,” “Carry the Zero” and a particularly strong “Twin Falls.”

Doug came out for the encore with an acoustic guitar playing “Dream” and “Offer” himself. The rest of the band joined him for “I Would Hurt A Fly” and they closed the set with an extended jam on “Broken Chairs.”

This show was the second time this year I was lucky enough to catch Built to Spill live. After listening to them conquer the Showbox I can say with complete certainty they are one of those bands that are infinitely better live than they are in the studio. Their music comes fully alive onstage, the mark of a great band.

Paula Cole achieved international fame with her hits “Where Have All The Cowboys Gone” and “I Don’t Want To Wait” (Dawson’s Creek theme song) recently played at The Triple Door. She’s currently touring in support of her fifth studio album, Ithica and will be back in town on February 18, 2011 at the Kirkland Performance Center.
