Show Review & Photos: Perry Acker @ the Rialto

Perry Acker @ the Rialto
Review & Photos by Abby Williamson

Perry Acker is a band made up of five guys hailing from Gig Harbor, Washington – of all places. I’m from there, so I know how little good actually comes from our town. I went to high school with two of the members of the band, and when I ventured out to their album release at the Rialto Theater in Tacoma last month, I found myself in a weird high school reunion. However, it was oddly enjoyable.

While Perry Acker is not my style of music in the slightest, they certainly pack a punch in terms of live performance.

But wait, I forgot to tell you about the fire alarm.

The Rialto is an old theater, and apparently it isn’t fully equipped for high-octane stage effects, a.k.a. fog machines. So literally 2 minutes into the introduction, the fire alarm went off from the fog on stage. The house was pretty full, so evacuating was quite a sight to see. It was definitely something I had never encountered at any show, and we were almost afraid that they would have to play outside or reschedule, but thankfully after the firemen scoured the building, we all made our way back inside to enjoy a night of local music.

What was I saying? Oh right – these guys have talent. Mark Johnson is a pure maestro at the keys. Rick Powers is a fantastic lead guitarist. Grady Lester is a true drummer if I have ever seen one. And I have seen a lot of drummers. Plus, I took band with this guy in high school, so I know he’s always been a drummer. Brandon Meade is one of the most expressive bassists I have seen in a long time, and frontman Pete Johnson embodies the band’s persona perfectly.

The show was filled with a friendly atmosphere, with people cheering from the crowd, “yeah Grady!” like it was a pep rally or something. If I can say one thing about Gig Harbor – it’s that we stick together. There was so much local support for the band that I was completely flabbergasted at how full the Rialto was that night.

Photos: City Arts Fest 2011 w/ Katie Kate @ Neumos

Katie Kate is the coolest. If you live in Seattle there is no reason why you should not have seen her by now. Treat yourself to an awesome, energetic performance whenever you see her on any bill. I caught part of her set during City Arts Fest at Neumos in October. Katie Kate’s songs are smart and fun. She is stylish and exciting to watch. Her brilliant album, Flatland, featuring the most wondrous songs, “Hunting” and “Bodyout Princess,” is out now!

Photos: Tiffany Parker @ Nectar Lounge

Local pop/soulful singer-songwriter Tiffany Parker played a well-received set at the Nectar Lounge on Sunday. As evidenced by all the encouraging comments shouted by the audience, Tiffany had a large group of fans, friends and family in attendance. Accompanied by Justin Clark on guitar and keys, Tiffany sang songs off her new album, Music Therapy, as well as several more recent ones. You can also check out Tiffany’s videos here.

I saw Seattle’s Sad Face last month at the Tractor Tavern, and yes, they are stunning. I hadn’t heard of this band – how? why was that? – and was torn to bits by their music. I didn’t know what they would do next. They’ll be at the Comet this Saturday, December 3rd. Do not miss their set. Get there early. Leave work early. Quit whatever you are doing early. I don’t care. Get in trouble.

Photos: Reykjavik Calling @ Neumos

The second annual Reykjavik Calling was held at Neumos on October 28th. The event, which musically celebrates the relationship between sister cities Seattle and Reykjavik (plus additional Nordic countries), included performances by Ólöf Arnalds, David Bazan, Sean Nelson, Shelby Earl, Gudrid Hansdóttir and Nive Nielsen. A big thank you to Simon Krane for these photos!
