New Zealand born singer-songwriter, Ladyhawke, recently played at Barboza, one of Seattle’s newest venues and located below Neumo’s. The North American tour in support of her new album, Anxiety will wrap up in LA in a few days, then it’s off to Europe in November.
Photographers Nicky Andrews, Simon Krane and Kirk Stauffer were busy bees at Bumbershoot earlier this month, getting photos of Niki and the Dove, Cosmetics and LP. A band for only approximately four years, Sweden’s Niki and the Dove are signed to Sub Pop and Mercury, and you can catch LP on Late Show with David Letterman on October 3rd.

Taking his time, doing it his way, and making sure to get it done around his acting schedule, (starring as Chris Keller on the CW’s ninth and final season of One Tree Hill),Tyler Hilton has made a triumphant return to making music with his latest CD, Forget The Storm, his first independent CD after leaving Warner Bros. Records. This year’s tour(s) are his first since since opening for Hilary Duff on her “Still Most Wanted Tour” as well as touring with Bethany Joy Lenz (OTH co-star), The Wreckers and Gavin DeGraw, both in 2005. You may also recognize Tyler from Taylor Swift’s music video for “Teardrops On My Guitar,” as well as his role as Young Elvis in the major motion picture Walk The Line. He continues his tour with a few more US dates, then heads to Europe, then wrapping things up just before Thanksgiving back in the states. Seattle natives The Wicks and singer-songwriter Kate Lynne Logan joined Tyler for a few of his Pacific Northwest dates, including this show at the Crocodile on Sept 6th. It was one of the hottest days of the year, but that didn’t stop fans from lining up to see this amazing triple bill.

I had a few must-see bands at this year’s Bumbershoot – one of them was Keane. I’ve seen every show the band has played in Seattle; Showbox at the Market, Paramount, the Moore, KeyArena – plus one trip to Vancouver, Canada – and now Bumbershoot. They’re one of the groups I have difficulty writing an objective review about because I love everything they have done. But what review is objective really?

Tom Chaplin, Richard Hughes, Tim Rice-Oxley and newest band member, Jesse Quin, had a slot on the Fisher Green Stage, one of Bumbershoot’s outdoor venues. It was a gorgeous match, a warm summer evening turning dark with the music of Keane. The sound and vocals were beyond perfect – I have to give huge compliments to the sound technician as I can’t think it is easy to deliver this kind of perfect acoustics outdoors, whether you are working with a high caliber group such as Keane or not. Combine great sound and great sounds, then you’ve got a winning combination.

Everything was beautiful. Chaplin’s voice was clear and strong – an absolute treasure of the music world – and all instruments were fabulous in each song. Beginning their set with “You Are Young” off 2012’s Strangeland, and ending with Bedshaped from their 2004 debut, Hopes and Fears, Keane returned for an encore of “Sovereign Light Café” and “Crystal Ball.” Keane, with four albums and one EP into their career, delve deep into the soul and emotion of poetry and music. I was especially moved by “Silenced By the Night,” “The Starting Line,” “Everybody’s Changing,” “Bedshaped,” “Crystal Ball” and “A Bad Dream” (two of three songs from Under The Iron Sea). I’d say the set was nearly half Strangeland and half Hopes and Dreams, which worked well together The band skipped over two of their works, Perfect Symmetry and Night Train – not so sure why, okay you can’t play everything – but the show they put together did present a cohesive and stunning collection of songs.

Austra, fronted and created by Katie Stelmanis, headlined at Neumos on Friday. The Canadian band is touring in support of their critically acclaimed debut release, Feel It Break. The classically-trained Stelmanis – whose middle name is Austra – was flanked by twin sisters Sari and Romy Lightman on backing vocals. Rounding out the band were drummer Maya Postepski, bassist Dorian Wolf and Ryan Wonsiak on keyboards.
