Photos and Review: Trixie Whitley at Barboza

Belgian-born, Trixie Whitley soulfully yet playfully took the stage at Barboza to a passionate yet intimate crowd. Her bluesy, alt rock style suited the understated elegence of Barboza.

Initially the fans sat dutifully in their chairs and tables. Trixie asked them to feel free to move closer and they complied with cheers and applause.

Trixie can be seen in the gritty black and white videos playing with Black Dub. At Barboza on Friday night, she played mostly alone with Jeff Taylor of Dumpster Hunter playing keyboards for several songs.

Whitley really seemed to enjoy herself when she tried a couple of songs with a vintage beatbox. She kept praying that the old beatbox would keep time. It did and she sounded great.

A terrific quadruple bill of Daydream Vacation, Head Like A Kite, Pony Time and Seven Dials hit the Vera Project’s stage on November 30th for some post-Thanksgiving Day awesomeness. Oh, and the evening included an appearance by a dancing panda (yes!!!). As with Daydream Vacation, Head Like A Kite and Pony Time, keep an eye on Seven Dials, a new band comprised of three siblings. Photos: Sephira @ Shoreline Auditorium

Sephira, comprised of red-headed Irish sisters Ruth and Joyce O’Leary, played a holiday show at the Shoreline Auditorium. Supporting their self-produced Christmas album Starlight, the combination of the sisters’ vocals and violins is the essence of the Sephira sound, which is largely classical/crossover with traditional Irish influences.

The line-up included The Joy Formidable, Of Monsters and Men, Grouplove, The Lumineers, Passion Pit, AWOLNATION, Metric, M83, and The Killers. Thanks Santa . . . evidently we were nice this year.

Photos: Alanis Morissette @ the Moore

Alanis Morissette headlined the Moore on October 5th as part of her release of album, Havoc and Bright Lights. Morissette, who was nominated by PETA as one of the world’s sexiest vegetarians in 2009, spent the four years between her prior release and this year’s setting up her home life: she got married, had a baby and became an American citizen.
