The great together Pangea, from California, opened for White Lies last spring at Showbox at the Market. I was instantly besotted with this band’s vibe and all-around excellent sound. Their new album, Badillac, is out now. Get it. You will love it.

The Westerlies?? That’s what I said too until I learned that they are an incredibly talented Indie Jazz brass quartet based in New York, originating from Seattle. The Westerlies have been publicly recognized by some of music’s brightest luminaries like Wynton Marsalis and Feist.
On Monday night they performed for a packed Chapel Performance Space in Wallingford. They excited the crowd with their new record Wish The Children Would Come On Home: The Music of Wayne Horvitz.
Make sure that you check out their work. You will not be disappointed.

Photos: Brent Amaker and the Rodeo @ the Tractor Tavern
Happy Birthday to me! Brent Amaker and the Rodeo played their second to last show on July 12th at the Tractor Tavern before they went on a break. Naturally I was there to celebrate my birthday at this show as midnight hit. Bunny Monroe performed, bassist Cinderella danced and got naked, fans underwent whiskey baptisms, and the entire group had the audience’s attention. Did they ever. I am going to miss this band – one I have seen many times – so much it rather hurts. Fingers crossed they will have something up their cowboy sleeves next year. Amaker is not going into hiding though; rather, he’s got a new and also very cool project with Vox Mod called Android Amaker. They’ll have their first show at Neumos on November 7th.

This July Slightly Stoopid returned to Marymoor Park for the first time since Washington State legalized recreational marijuana use. Not that there was anything like that going on during the show – nothing like that happening. I kid. The event’s more than just an excuse to party – although that’s fine too – but a time to hear Slightly Stoopid play their catalog in a great setting, and to check out openers Stephen Marley and G. Love & Special Sauce. All photos by Dan Rogers:
Photos: Capitol Hill Block Party – Day 1 , Part 3 w/Matt and Kim
The ebullient Matt and Kim wound up an already excited audience at day one of the Capitol Hill Block Party. This set was my final one of the evening, and I loved the happy interaction between this duo and their fans. Matt and Kim were part of the wave of New York bands, including A$AP Ferg and Small Black, taking over the main stage on Friday.
