Rockers Pennywise appeared at Showbox at the Market in April, 2014. New album Yesterdays includes the drawing back into the Pennywise fold of singer Jim Lindberg – that’s a great development. All photos by Alex Crick:

“Mark Lanegan and his sexy voice” is how I posted really quick on Facebook to the world while catching Lanegan’s opening set for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds on July 2nd. With a voice on magnificent par with another of my favorite singers, Brit Richard Hawley, Lanegan sincerely charmed that hardened audience. Nick Cave fans are serious concert-goers. They would not, as the phrase goes, suffer any fool gladly. Lanegan – the opposite of anything foolish- is a vocalist of such sinuous evolution, who could shut up any uneasy audience.
If you don’t know Mark Lanegan as a solo artist, you would probably know his band, the Screaming Trees. A friend of mine boldly stated that Lanegan’s voice never got the recognition it deserved in the Screaming Trees. This is probably the case. On his own Lanegan can let that beauty pop out right damn in front. His set included songs from albums including I’ll Take Care of You and Blues Funeral plus his album of covers, Imitations. About that cover album. There’s a part of me that thinks about how great it would be if Lanegan’s voice covered any of my favorite songs. From Imitations, he selected “Mack the Knife” and a perfectly moody “You Only Live Twice.”
Lanegan also joined Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds for the Bad Seeds’ “The Weeping Song,” duetting with Cave in a moment of rare sublimity.
No Bells, Mark Lanegan’s latest album, is out now!

Rockabilly queen Imelda May graced the stage at the Neptune Theatre last week. The sassy Irish singing star was decked out in a Fifties-style dress, blonde kiss curl and a long ponytail. May’s third album Mayhem was in the Top 10, and her next album, Tribal, is due out next month. Los Angeles-based Black Mambas opened.

Sometimes awful things such as hard drive meltdowns or other technical problems occur. We all know that. Somehow along the way there was a delay with our James Blake coverage from his show in November at Showbox SoDo. That’s most likely a fault on the part of the otherwise trustworthy editor, and for that we are sorry. So, here are Abby Williamson‘s lovely shots of Blake’s fall 2013 appearance. It appears Blake is taking a much-deserved break from touring for now!
