Tegan and Sara – Canadian identical twin sisters Tegan and Sara Quin – played to a packed, very enthusiastic audience at the Paramount Theatre earlier this week. The fall run of their “Let’s Make Things Physical” tour made a stop in Seattle in support of their latest album, Heartthrob. The witty duo had the crowd roaring with their usual clever banter between songs.
Photos: Bumbershoot – Day 1 w/ Elvis Costello & Sam Lachow
I’ve seen the massively wonderful Elvis Costello several times now, twice at Bumbershoot. This year his appearance at Bumbershoot seemed abbreviated (hist last Bumbershoot show was 3 hours), as, for some reason, Wu-Tang Clan was scheduled after him. Costello could have continued playing on that Main Stage, and the audience would have been happy for it (can you tell I am not that big on Wu-Tang Clan?). Why Elvis Costello would be scheduled ahead of ANYBODY, I do not know. Anyway, Costello’s performance was pure magic. He’s an international treasure – music gold, and it was exquisite to see him have such a large audience of people who were fellow fans. Thanks Elvis!

Over on the Fisher Green Stage Sam Lachow, rapper/producer/director/he who does everything, had a huge crowd to see him. Photographer Simon Krane caught his set – I missed the beginning of it. By the time I got there, I saw an audience who was large and happy. He returns to Seattle with a show at the Neptune on November 29th.

Photos: Bumbershoot – Day 1 w/ Walk the Moon, Mac DeMarco, the Both & Wu-Tang Clan
After exploring the schedule for Bumbershoot, a few of the artists photographers Abby Williamson and Simon Krane selected to cover on day one included Walk the Moon, Mac Demarco, the Both and Wu-Tang Clan. By the way, the big breakthrough from Cincinnati, Walk the Moon are set to release their second album with RCA in December (oh hi, present alert!), and music fans are also thrilled to see the joining of Ted Leo and Aimee Mann to form the Both. Mac DeMarco’s April Fool’s Day 2014 release, Salad Days, failed to win the Polaris Music Prize, but. . . well, whatever. Wu-Tang played their set after Elvis Costello, which was just a peculiar “pairing” at the festival.

Photos: Frankie Rose @ Barboza
Frankie Rose played at Barboza last week nearing the end of her headlining west coast tour. Joined by her band put together with New York performers specifically for the tour, Rose performed numerous songs from her second full-length album, Herein Wild, as well as Interstellar released in 2012. One reason I enjoy Rose’s music is that she is a former member of two of my favorites – Vivian Girls and Dum Dum Girls.
