Dandy Warhols

Details: Portland’s got many things you can call their pride and joy; one of them is definitely the Dandy Warhols. They shared songs off 2016’s Distortland live in Seattle for the first time (by the way, if you love that album loads, you can get it live on vinyl), and the psychedelic quartet had London’s Telegram open the evening. Touring with the Dandy Warhols brought Telegram to America for the first time!

Katy Perry @ Tacoma Dome

Katy Perry brought her WITNESS: The Tour to a capacity crowd at the Tacoma Dome. It was an elaborate production with numerous dancers, intricate props, band, backup singers, costumes, confetti cannons and a long runway to maximize the audiences’ exposure. This was Perry’s last US show of her North American tour – then it’s off to Europe and Australia. Canadian pop singer Carly Rae Jepsen opened.

Walking Papers‘ Barrett Martin

Saturday, January 27th was a fantastic night for the blues.

When I first heard Walking Papers was performing at the Crocodile, I wanted to see them because of Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses fame. At first, I was a little disappointed when I discovered that he wasn’t appearing on stage at The Crocodile.

Pleasantly surprised, Walking Papers was great without Duff. Jefferson Angell (vocals) has such a gritty presence that would be right at home in a vintage black and white photograph. Barrett Martin, drummer for Screaming Trees, has that certain something that draws you in. With Ben Anderson on keys and the tight horn section, they couldn’t go wrong.

Country singer Cam started her set with a bang – the new single “Diane” – which NPR listed in their The 100 Best Songs Of 2017. The sold-out show at the Crocodile Café was near the finale of her The Best Coast Tour. Meet and greet participant Kelsey came onstage to sing with Cam. Logan Mize and Dirty Bird opened.

Jason McCue

A belated congratulations to the final four competitors in Sound Off! 2017. Folk artist Jason McCue, a transplant from Philadelphia, won first place. He followed up that win with numerous shows in Seattle last year. Coming in second was R&B singer Falon Sierra, who also had a huge live presence in the area. At third and fourth places were, respectively, the electronic Torpoise (another prolific live act), and rock quartet The Good Weird. These wins open up many opportunities, and you can see the 2018 Sound Off!, starting on Friday, February 9th, at MoPop.
