Photos and Review: The Wailin’ Jennys @ Benaroya Hall

Winnipeg, Canada’s, The Wailin Jennys filled Benaroya Hall with their soaring angelic voices. I didn’t have a lot of experience with the Jennys until I saw the show. My wife, on the other hand, is a huge fan of their harmonies. Those who like Emmylou Harris, Sara Vonn, and Alison Krauss will love the Wailin Jennys.

Rare for live performances, the Jennys partnered with National Alliance of Mental Illness to bring awareness to mental illness and to remove the stigma. The Jennys announced their history of working with NAMI all over the US and Canada.

Another rarity and something worth noting was how Jennys thanked the entire Benaroya Hall crew by name. These talented women called out the names of those who helped them one by one. Of all the shows that I have seen, I have never seen that. Very refreshing indeed.

The crowd really loved the show. They loved it so much that they gave the Jennys two standing ovations.

The last song of the night was a traditional Irish song that the Jennys sang without mics or amplification of any kind. They still sounded incredible. They are truly talented and they should be high on your list of events in Seattle, or any town where you can see them.

Country singer-songwriter Margo Price brought her Nowhere Fast Tour to a sold-out show at the Neptune Theatre. Backed by a six-member band that included her songwriting partner and husband Jeremy Ivey, they featured many songs off Price’s most recent album, All American Made. She even sat down and played drums on “Cocaine Cowboy.” Only 16 months ago, Price played at the much smaller Tractor Tavern. Nashville-based Blank Range opened.

Memory Lane Series, part 27

Matthew Ramsey of Old Dominion

This one really fits in our Memory Lane Series! It’s awesome photos by Kirsey Danae of Old Dominion’s Seattle, December 2016 show. The country rock band shared songs from their second album, Meat and Candy, which got them many nominations in the country music world – plus the American Music Awards. In 2017, Old Dominion hit the charts hard with a number 1 spot on Billboard’s Top Country Albums for Happy Endings. Big bonus? You can catch them on tour with Kenney Chesney this year!

Photos: Amy Shark @ Columbia City Theater

Australian Amy Shark played at the Columbia City Theater in support of her recently released album, Night Thinker. The show was typical of those on her North American tour – sold-out! Backed by drums and keys, Amy played guitar on many of the songs during her set. I look forward to seeing Amy again in a few weeks at SXSW. Connie Lim, who performs as MILCK, opened.
