The Smashing Pumpkins

The Smashing Pumpkins’ The Shiny and Oh So Bright Tour, named after the band’s 2018 album Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun., made an August stop in Seattle on August 24th. The tour’s shows included drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, guitarist James Iha and singer-guitarist Billy Corgan, which made a rare lineup to experience. Iha’s on the new release, a welcome back after having no involvement with the Smashing Pumpkins for 18 years. Keep their new album on your radar; the Rick Rubin-produced record has a November 16th release date. Canadian band Metric opened the Seattle show. They just had a fall album release for Art of Doubt, with a world tour in progress right now.

FIDLAR

Get a live taste of tracks from FIDLAR’s upcoming 2019 release, Almost Free (among other FIDLAR tracks, of course!) at the Showbox tomorrow night. The Los Angeles punk band, who gets its name from the phrase Fuck It Dog, Life’s a Risk, now has four albums on Mom + Pop Records. I’d check out other bands on that label as well, which includes Jagwar Ma, Neon Indian and Courtney Barnett. Basically, FIDLAR is in some fine company.

After forming in 2009, FIDLAR got their first album, FIDLAR, out in 2013. A quartet, including brothers Elvis and Max Kuehn, is very well known for their great live shows and powerful music. Also, FIDLAR has a girls-only mosh pit. Yes!! And the show is all ages as well.

Check out this link for tickets and more information on the show.

PS: I am enjoying the band’s Facebook page chronicling their current tour. The pop-up masked appearances are wonderful. Where will they turn up in Seattle?

Calexico‘s Joey Burns

Calexico had hips swaying and hands clapping at the Neptune on June 9th. The Tucson-based group combined indie rock and alt-country with a variety of traditional Latin musical influences to produce a spectrum of moods and styles throughout the set. The show featured several cumbias, including “Flores y Tamales,” sung by Spanish guitarist Jairo Zavala Ruiz.

The seven-man band is the product of two decades of collaboration between guitarist–vocalist Joey Burns and drummer John Convertino. This tour showcased Calexico’s ninth studio album, The Thread that Keeps Us. Consistent with themes from that work, Burns paused at the mic to call for immigration reform and unity through music.

Opening the show was Australian singer–songwriter Julia Jacklin, who performed solo guitar tunes before being joined by two members of Calexico. Her set combined alt-country, folk, and indie-rock influences, interrupted by charming banter about the Space Needle (“We have one of those in Sydney, too”).
Calexico’s encore first brought back Jacklin to sing with the band, and then continued with some older favorites. The night closed with “Güero Canelo,” including a surprise chorus of the Cuban double entendre El Cuarto de Tula.
