I had never heard of alternative folk music before I entered Neumos on Saturday, January 13th. However, when Odie Leigh and the Official Bard of Baldwin County graced the stage, I was pleasantly surprised. The sound was decidedly Americana, but with a new wave edge. Opener the Official Bard of Baldwin County spoke to queer representation and taboo topics, underscored by solo guitar riffs worthy of mainstream praise. Odie Leigh entered the stage with a small band comprised of an upright bass player, drummer and Leigh on guitar. Eventually she played a few songs solo, reminiscing on the time when she only ever played solo. Her song “Take Back” is still stuck in my head. It’s a catchy tune reminding me that sometimes, I should put myself first. A valuable message to take into the new year.
