Show Review & Photos: ODESZA @ Showbox at the Market

ODESZA @ Showbox at the Market, 10/24/14
Show Review & Photos by Dagmar

It’s about time that electronic music got big in Seattle. Leading this charge of electronic wonders is ODESZA, a duo (Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight) who recently headlined Showbox at the Market for two hugely sold-out dates. I don’t know if the expression “blissed out” is no longer trendy. I don’t care. Because that is what ODESZA’s music does to you.

I caught night two of their evenings at the Showbox, and neither musician showed any sign of fatigue (okay, why should they? but you never know what will happen playing two home nights in a row). There had to be extra stress when playing for people you know. But I could feel the energy and love in that room as the audience danced and images splashed onto the screen behind ODESZA. This duo knows how to blend all their songs oh so well, and I love them.

ODESZA just completed a European tour, and are set for what is basically a world tour next year. You need to experience this band.

The Blood Brothers reunited in August for a show at the Showbox. A wicked reunion if there ever was, the Seattle rock band also played shows in other cities in October and November. Who can say if this is a sign of more Blood Brothers – maybe? Maybe? Photographer Monica Martinez joined the sold-out crowd and captured some shots of all the magic:

During alt-J‘s Seattle show in October, fans appeared to be in a musically-inspired altered, dream state. There’s something very magical about alt-J and how they know, precisely, how to create sounds that you can see and feel. I don’t know how they do it, but they do. Their music surrounds everything: your breath, your heart. . . an entire room of people. alt-J’s second album, This Is All Yours, has kept the British band’s momentum going. One of my favorite songs from that album is “The Gospel of John Hurt,” which they performed in Seattle.

Photos: LIGHTS @ Showbox at the Market

The amazing LIGHTS brought her Little Machines Tour to the Showbox at the Market on November 15th. She featured songs from the recently released Little Machines, her third studio album, as well as the 2012 Juno-nominated for Best Pop Album of the Year, Siberia. (LIGHTS herself won a 2009 Juno in the Best New Artist category.) The interaction between LIGHTS and the audience was incredible – frequently reaching out to the audience and even walking on the barricade during a song. LIGHTS’ tour will continue in Canada, then it’s off to Europe in January.

Photos: Bumbershoot – Day 2 w/ Pickwick, the Dismemberment Plan & Kishi Bashi

Seattle’s Pickwick and Kishi Bashi, plus D.C.’s the Dismemberment Plan had spots at this year’s Bumbershoot Festival. Pickwick, who, on Facebook, lists the Space Needle as their home, are absolutely hometown favorites. After releasing their first album in 12 years, called Uncanney Valley, punk rock outfit the Dismemberment Plan has made all their fans very happy. Innovative artist Kishi Bashi (Kaoru Ishibashi), a violinist experimenting with pop, and, really everything, is currently on tour. He’ll appear at Seattle’s Neptune on January 27th.
