News & Photos: Sound Off! Semifinals #1 @ EMP
Sound Off!, the annual band competition for artists under 21, turned 14 in 2015! Open to musicians from Washington, Idaho, and British Columbia (or, as we know it, the Pacific Northwest), the event began this year with Bleachbear, Champagne Babylon, Nightspace and Super Soaked competing in Semfinals #1. And the winner of this round? Bleachbear, a trio self-proclaimed as “dream-pop grunge.” The wild card spot went to Champagne Babylon. All photos by Simon Krane:

Back on August 17, 2014, Dirty Heads and Pepper made a summer visit to Marymoor Park. Dirty Heads, who combine all kinds of genres, go back on the road in mid-March. Their latest album, Sound of Change, included a song with Tech N9ne. Also on the bill was Katastro, a Tempe, Arizona rock band. All photos by Jimmy Lovaas:
Photos: Jane Monheit @ Triple Door
Jazz vocalist Jane Monheit paid tribute to Judy Garland at the Triple Door on February 19th. It was interesting to listen to Judy’s songs beautifully sung by Jane with her own style. She was accompanied by her talented band – Michael Kanan (piano), Neal Miner (bass) and husband Rick Montalbano (drums) – who frequently performed their own solos. Jane gave a brief history/intro to every song and would frequently kid with her husband. The show closed with Garland’s signature song “Over The Rainbow/Hello Bluebird” followed by a jazzy rendition of “Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead” during the encore.
Show Review & Photos: Meghan Trainor @ Neptune Theatre
Meghan Trainor @ the Neptune, 2/14/15
Show Review & Photos by Kirk Stauffer
The long line of tweens, teens, parents, and couples stretched around the corner of the Neptune Theater waiting for the doors to open. Many of the girls were dressed in typical Meghan Trainor outfits – complete with bows in their hair. Seattle was the third stop on Trainor’s North American tour and the show had been sold-out for months.
On cue, Meghan hit the stage with her band and four dancers, two of which were also backup singers. There was a lot of interaction with the audience, from start to finish. Meghan would frequently reach over the photo pit to touch hands with the hyper-enthusiastic crowd. She also brought two young girls on stage and sang a song to them. Not surprising, nearly all the songs were from her debut release, Title, which has already spun off two singles. The encore ended with one of them, “All About That Bass,” which itself ended with confetti canons erupting. Although the theater has a capacity of 900, I’m sure we’ll never see Meghan play in a Seattle venue of this size again. Up, up and away …
