One of the really cool things about taking photos of in-studios at KEXP is the introduction I get to bands. Sometimes that introduction is seeing them in a studio setting, which makes any band seem different, but other times it’s an exposure to a band I know nothing about. It was the latter scenario when I got to photograph Toronto, Canada’s Kobo Town.
Kobo Town, a band combining calypso, reggae and other genres, put on an exciting in-studio performance. Band leader and singer Drew Gonsalves spent many of his formative years in his native Trinidad, before moving with his mother to Canada. The Trinidadian influence stayed in his music, and with two albums, including 2013’s Jumbie in the Jukebox, Gonsalves has delivered something really special.
I really dig this band. The Triple Door hosts Kobo Town tomorrow, Thursday July 10th. I wholeheartedly recommend the show!
