CD Review: Aim and Ignite by fun.

Aim and Ignite, the debut CD from fun. contains ten songs, all of them great. Three musicians from three successful bands, Steel Train’s Jack Antonoff, Anthallo’s Andrew Dost and the Format’s Nate Ruess have joined together and created something one-of-a-kind. Any song on here can at any time morph into a completely different song, then return to what you thought it was. I like that. I also like that the songs differ in style from each other.

Hail Nate Ruess’ voice. It’s got a silvery, emotional quality to it. Several songs on here make perfect use of horns, string instruments, piano as well as traditional rock sounds. The lyrics are genuinely versatile as well: Be Calm’s You hate your pulse because it thinks you’re still alive and Benson HedgesNow at least the birds are singing to me/but what they’re trying to say/I don’t know.

My favorite tracks are All the Pretty Girls, At Least I’m Not as Sad (As I Used to Be) and Light a Roman Candle. I’ve been listening to this CD repeatedly since I received it last week and all songs are holding up extremely well but All the Pretty Girls and At Least . . . are abnormal and joyous rubies.
