Photos: The Redwood Plan CD Release @ the Crocodile

The Redwood Plan played the Crocodile on Friday to celebrate the release of their new EP, Movers Shakers Makers. Damn I love this band. They’re forceful without the music or performance being forced. They’re one of those bands that includes you in the music in a way that’s unashamed and unpretentious. When singer/guitarist/keyboardist sings I am you are – we are movers shakers makers in the EP’s title track it’s with a lusty glee, and Je Suis Romantique is a 10 out of 10 star wicked song. I’ve seen this band three times recently and would happily see them more often. Alex Crick documented the band’s activities the day of show, and later he, Amelia and I took photos at their show that Friday night. It’s really cool to have photos of the band as they prepare and hang out and I want to say thank you to Alex in particular for contributing this material.

Photos: Depeche Mode @ KeyArena

Photographer Marcella Volpintesta got some beautiful and shiny photos of Depeche Mode last night when they played KeyArena. The band was in fine form and these photos prove what I have suspected for some time – that Dave Gahan looks better now than he even did when they first started. It’s pleasantly disturbing. My favorite moments? Fly on the Windscreen, the band in spacesuits on the big screen in the background, headbanging by Gahan and Martin Gore, headbanging dancing girl in short S&M skirt on the big screen, I Feel You, Stripped, In Your Room, Personal Jesus, Master and Servant, Martin Gore’s silver shoes and clothes, and the peculiar fact of there being an actual live drummer playing at the show. They also had one of the best merchandise tables I have seen recently. There were about 7 shirts well worth buying.

Show Preview: Back Beat Seattle’s First Showcase This Friday

Back Beat Seattle hosts our first showcase with The Redwood Plan, What What Now and THEESatisfaction on Friday, August 14th at the historic Blue Moon. Show starts at 10pm and is $5.

poster by Amelia Gydé

We’re proud of this lineup as it features three amazing local bands, whose sounds range from hip-hop to hard rock to rock with synthesizer flavor. It will also be one of THEESatisfaction’s last Seattle shows before the sci-fi ladies move to San Francisco. We’ve seen What What Now and The Redwood Plan numerous times among the Back Beat staffers and know that they, as THEESatisfaction, will show you a good time.

Photos & Show Review: Seaweed & the Whore Moans @the Crocodile

The headliner Seaweed had a friendly, mostly male and energetic fan base. That’s cool and it was even cooler to watch these fans mosh while I was at a safe distance from the action. This meant that I was able to take a small video of the moshing just with my little camera so while it’s not great quality I still find it entertaining. Perhaps you will see yourself in the footage. I hate talking about music holding up well because it’s a cliché but then there’s a reason for these cliché sayings and it’s true when talking about this band. I will admit to being no expert when it comes to them but what I heard sounded great, especially Squint.

The Whore Moans move around so fast when performing that taking pictures of them must be what it’s like trying to take pictures of lightning. When I saw that they were opening for Seaweed at the Crocodile I had to see what they’d make of the new stage. Not only did I see what they’d make of the stage – I also got to see what they would make of the walls and the balcony. Sometimes I can’t decide whether hey look like they are being attacked by their instruments or are attacking them. Generally I think it’s the latter scenario. Some of my favorite songs of the set included Disappear, Wall of a Song, Nerve Tonic and Rise and Shine. This is a must see band, wherever they play but their next show is at Bumbershoot, where they’ll play the EMP Skychurch. I have two requests for them. One is that they use a lot of blue light – it’s great for photos. Two is that they do Fingers and Martyrs. Please.
