Photos: the lonely forest’s cd release show @ the vera project + blue moon show shots

VERA Project was packed for The Lonely Forest’s CD release show on Saturday. This band has palpably evolved in the ten months since I first saw them live, and they were great already. Certainly in their element on Saturday, their set was passionate and hugely energetic. An entire choir traveled from TLF’s hometown of Anacortes to join them at times, singing from the audience. “We Sing In Time” was a highlight for me, as nearly the entire audience along with the choir in the audience joined in.

New Faces are adorable. They’re also a wonderfully talented trio of musicians who create music I love. They bashed out a great set and I look forward to seeing them again.

I love Wild Orchid Children and so did the kids at VERA, who were still hopped up from New Faces when WOC took the stage. I was thankfully granted access to the balcony, not up for moshy tomfoolery, and I stayed up there for most of the rest of the show. Wild Orchid Children sounded great (once Kirk’s mic issues were resolved) and they blazed through a terrific set.

Dagmar and I proved ourselves to be irrefutable music addicts by choosing the Blue Moon as our post-VERA drinking destination. 13th Grade was nearing the end of their set and I couldn’t resist grabbing a photo. I’ve not seen them before but surely will.

I also caught a show at Blue Moon on Thursday, where a sparse and appreciative audience responded to  The Skyfire Puzzle. I love their sound as much as I hate their name, and I hope to catch them again soon. High Divide and The Mass Magicians rounded out the night.

News: Punter buys Sonic Youth’s stolen guitar on Ebay

I read this amazing thread on Offsetguitars.com about one lucky guitarist buying a Fender Mustang on Ebay for $500…only to discover it was one of the many pieces of equipment stolen when someone drove off with Sonic Youth’s equipment van in 1999!

To save you reading all 35 pages of the thread, here’s what went down:  A police chief in Ohio bought the guitar on Ebay earlier this year, to assist with his dabbling in Most Wanted, an outreach rock group that tours local schools.  Here’s the original listing:

FENDER MUSTANG GUITAR 1969 FOR PARTS
As you can see this thing  is in bad shape! The body has a crack ,and the  pickup hole and bridge hole was routed. I bought this guitar and found this out when I took the pickup plate off .
One tuning peg is missing and the hardware is filthy, The neck is in  usable but will need a fret/job. What you see is what’s is included in this auction.
USA Shipping only.

Our buddy the cop then restored it and sold it to Michael aka Sauerkraut, a guitar enthusiast from The Netherlands who just thought he was getting a sweet deal on a new axe.  When he found out that his new guitar was the property of one of the most legendary guitarists in alt music history, he emailed the band’s management to simply offer to return the guitar – a really noble act considering he was now the proud/stunned owner of every Sonic Youth fan’s wet dream:

Lee Ranaldo was keen to get his guitar back (as featured in the MacBeth video, among others), and offered the guy tickets to their show in Dusseldorf, reimbursement for what he paid for the guitar, and a little something extra to boot.  The official handback is being held up by customs, but arrangements are being made.

It’s amazing that Michael made the connection that it was the stolen guitar, actually decided to contact the band to give it back, and then Sonic Youth were already scheduled to play only a few miles from his hometown!  A lovely feel-good story for a Friday night.  Enjoy the weekend!

Photos: The Presets @ Neumos

I’ve heard people say no one dances at shows in Seattle. This is just not true, especially if you’re at a Presets concert. There were masses of people pushed together and dancing with little or no inhibition. The Presets are such a mighty band and have grown even stronger since I saw them last year with Cut Copy. They’re something to relish indeed.

Favorites of mine from the whopper of a set: I Go Hard, I Go Home, Are You the One?, Yippiyo-Ay, My People and This Boy’s in Love.

I took photos of the show and am including a few here. For more visit the following links: presets @ neumos 1, presets @ neumos 2.
