Matthew Healy of the 1975

Girls started fainting before Manchester, England’s the 1975 even took the stage, and I don’t think it was from any kind of waiting-for-the-show fatigue or dehydration. These girls were excited to see the 1975, a band who has great songs and shows. The 1975 also turn out to be very attractive, so I get the fainting. I really do.

As with the group’s Seattle appearance in April 2014 at the Showbox, the 1975 proved it’s a rare breed with a distinct sound. Performing all but two songs (“Talk!” and “12”) off its self-titled debut album plus six songs from three EPs,the 1975 went down a treat. That many of the 1975’s songs won’t get radio play due to *ahem* lyrical content is a shame – not that there is a lack of 1975 songs you can play on the radio. I respect that artistic choice; It’s brought about some excellent lyrics. “Chocolate,” “Settle Down,” “M.O.N.E.Y.,” “Talk!” “Girls,” “Sex,” “Heart Out” all got the audience all wild. Other standouts were definitely “Is There Somebody Who Can Watch You?” and IV‘s “Fallingforyou,” which gave Healy an opportunity to show off some different vocals.

It’s a really wonderful thing to see this band live. And it’s wonderful to see it do whatever it wants. I don’t have the feeling it will bow to any external pressure demanding it change and become like other bands.

How much am I and all those other fans looking forward to the 1975’s next release? Oh so much.
