Mayer Hawthorne

In a classy grey suit, super artist Mayer Hawthorne turned up the sexy when he and his band seduced Seattle last Monday. The sold-out crowd at Neumos danced, sang along and I think – if they didn’t before – that right after the magnificent entry leading into “Back Seat Lover,” they all wanted to be Hawthorne’s “cheap backseat lover.” He had an excited audience who were just so happy to be there.

I’ve been lucky enough to see Mayer Hawthorne three times over the last few years, and each time he has gotten better and better. He’s a magic showman, talented songwriter and for a photographer’s benefit: he’s a fabulous photo subject. He’s also an excellent guitarist with a great band. I loved how he and his band did synchronized dances with the songs, especially in “I Wish It Would Rain.” Hawthorne’s one of the few artists I can say that if you don’t like him, you’re just wrong. Three soulful albums along into his career, I get the feeling he’s just getting started. His set list included a good spread of all albums, and here were my favorites: “Back Seat Lover,” “The Innocent,” “Wine Glass Woman,” “A Long Time,” (the ode to Detroit, and encouragement for its future) “No Strings,” “Green Eyed Love,” the perfect “Crime,” and “Get To Know You,” plus a sweet mashup of Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” with “The Walk.” Also wickedly fun was “The Stars Are Ours,” and for an encore he chilled us out with “Her Favorite Song.”

Anytime Mayer Hawthorne wants to have a party à la “Crime,” he’s welcome in many Seattle backyards, including mine.
