Australian band Empire of the Sun headlined the Paramount in October and put on an illustrious show. Singer guitarist Luke Steele performed solo (along with a drummer and a guitarist), as singer Nick Littlemore has opted out of touring this time round. Even if you were disappointed Littlemore chose to sit out this tour, Steele more than capably held his own for the live show.
With a troupe of four dancers and awesome light show, Empire of the Sun only used these bonuses as emphasis for their music. Empire of the Sun’s songs are always attractive pieces, and for the Seattle show I chose these as my favorites: “We Are the People,” “Standing on the Shore,” “Walking on a Dream,” “Concert Pitch,” “Swordfish Hotkiss Night,” and “Alive.” That’s most of the set list!
Empire of the Sun released their second album, the great Ice on the Dune, in June 2013. The group’s first album came out in 2008, so the wait was a long, but happily ended one. I’m hoping for more music from them – and another Seattle show would be lovely as well. For now I’ll be glad I got to see Empire of the Sun’s really cool live show even once.
