There was really no doubt that I would involve Atomic Rodeo: A NYE Throwdown in my New Year’s Eve plans. The event, held at one of my favorite venues – one that has revamped itself wonderfully and in such a horrible economic climate – brought Brent Amaker and the Rodeo, Atomic Bombshells Burlesque and Country Lips together to ring in 2013. First let me apologize to Country Lips for missing their set. Now, on to what I did catch, and what a spectacle these acts gave the audience. The burlesque performers were sparkling and sexy magic. Hey wait, so were the Rodeo. What really made sense in combining these arts, aside from the obvious of dance and music, was the way the Rodeo and the dancers combined humor and darkness within a wrapping of beauty – whether it was through movement or music. The Rodeo, in their good guy white cowboy suits, matched the spirit of a Brazilian New Year’s celebration (one wears white for New Year’s in Rio, after all). And it was particularly fun to sing along to the Rodeo’s song “Tequila,” whose hook is Tequila/Cerveza. The snow globe machine was an awesome touch to shower the stage and audience in a winter wonderland atmosphere.
