Photos and Review: Coheed and Cambria @ Showbox SODO

I was a little late showing up to Showbox Saturday night and missed my opportunity to shoot Circa Survive, who played to a sold out crowd opening for Coheed and Cambria. Though what I did catch of their set was pretty awesome – their singer, Anthony Green has an amazing voice and their stage setup was like nothing I’d seen before with some kind of crazy mirrored panels set up behind them, which added depth and extra light to the stage. I’m sure the mirrors were also an added visual bonus for all the people in the crowd who were high…

While I’ve never been the world’s biggest fan of Coheed and Cambria, I’ve always liked their music to some degree. This show changed that for me. Watching them play live certainly helped to push me over to the other side of any sort of fence I may have been sitting on in regards to my enjoyment of their music. They were full on for the entire length of their set, tearing up the stage with crazy guitar solos and lengthy (but not too lengthy) jam sessions. The stage lighting was a bit dim, making it slightly difficult to get any really good shots off. But at the same time I can’t help but wonder if the dim lighting was all part of some kind of plan to better show off the motion of Claudio’s gnarly ‘fro through the use of slower shutter speeds as he flung his head around while jumping across the stage (but, that’s just my geeky-photographer conspiracy theory on the situation).
