Photos: Dead Confederate, Ume & Meat Puppets @ Chop Suey

I’ve never been much of a Meat Puppets fan, and last night (my first MP show) didn’t improve that standing. I didn’t give them much of a chance to win me over, true, but sometimes a few songs is all I need to know if I’m going to like a band live. I’ve listened to Meat Puppets casually since Meat Puppets II, but never connected with their music, unlike their fans who love them with time-tested loyalty that is fun to witness. It was Dead Confederate that pulled me to Chop Suey on a work night and their set was extraordinary, sounding much better than in the cavernous Exhibition Hall where they played at Bumbershoot. I love every Dead Confederate song I’ve heard, and “Get Out” and “Tortured Artist Saint” stood out as favorites at Wednesday’s show. Even though I’ve seen them three times this month (and eight times total), I’d gladly go again (and again) if given the chance. More Dead Confederate photos here.

I didn’t know what to expect from Austin’s Ume, having listened to about 1/3 of one of their songs before the show. Wow. Ume was incredible and I can’t wait to see them again.
