No Doubt played a frenzied set at Auburn’s White River Amphitheatre, Sunday 19 July,  as part of their triumphant reunion tour.  An 18,000-strong crowd of all ages warmed up to pop by Swedish darlings The Sounds and Tennessee’s Paramore, both notably led by female vocalists.

No Doubt emerged in full force, putting to rest any fears that the performance could disappoint.  The band grooved their way through all the old favourites, opening with the contagious Spiderwebs, and closing the set with the bouncy anthem, Just A Girl.   A reverent audience proudly waved lighters, cellphones, and cameras during the much-anticipated Don’t Speak, while hits such as Hey Baby proved sure to get the dancers moving.

Far from what you’d expect from a mother-of-two pushing forty, energy levels ran high as the infamous Gwen Stefani impressed with push-ups, aerobic high-kicks, and maintained a hummingbird-like degree of movement throughout the set.  The atmosphere was joyous and truly fit for summer, with drummer Adrian Young sporting a mohawk and tutu, and band members exchanging grins amid familiar tunes.  Stefani managed three costume changes ranging from a black and silver sequinned romper to acid-washed jeans dripping with chains.

Gwen did her best to win over the audience, singling out a fan at the front of the crowd who was bearing a sign reading “Sign my tattoo, Gwen!”.  Playing it up, Stefani mused aloud “Hmm…do you really want me to sign your arm there, and then you’re going to go away and get that tattooed on you?”.  After what must have felt like eternity for one dedicated fan, she was rewarded when Gwen ushered her up onstage, had the band drum up a fanfare fit for a Harajuku queen, and dutifully took pen to fangirl flesh.  Further fan service was dished up with Stefani crouching down to have her picture taken with an adoring fan, and dedicating another song to all those sticking it out in the grassy seated area toward the back of the venue.  Spanning an hour and a half, the crowd left on a high as they jived, moshed, and sang their way through Sunday Morning.
